The Huawei UGW9811 is a unified packet gateway, and it can be used in 2.5G General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) system, 3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (UMTSs), or Evolved Packet Core (EPC) systems. 

 

What is the Evolution of the mobile network?

As providers work to achieve wider area coverage, high-speed data transmission, and integration with the internet, the network applied must evolve to support these changes. The mobile network has evolved from the 2G global system for mobile communications (GSM)to the 2.5G general packet radio service (GPRS), and the 3G universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) to the enhanced 3G (E3G) long term evolution (LTE). However, with the rapid development and diversification of requirements, there are still some limitations. Firstly, the 3G UMTS system is only able to support non-live services and is dependent on the circuit switched domain (CS) to handle voice services. As a result, there are two separate network operations for packed switched domain (PS) and CS. This results in the inability to optimize and create a centralized network maintenance which in turns drives up the cost. Secondly, there is low efficiency in routing and forwarding data due to network overlayer. Lastly, the current system is unable to support multiple radio access systems.

What is EPC network?

To tackle the limitations of the current systems and ensure that we have sound infrastructure for future network developments, the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) was developed. The following are a few key characteristics of the EPC network,

  • The all-IP network contains only PS and voice services are supported by the PS and IP multimedia subsystem (IMS). This removes the issue of having to maintain two separate network operations thus increasing efficiency. 
  • The S-GW and P-GW can be implemented in a single physical node thus removing network overlayer. 
  • Supports multiple systems and networks. The EPC system supports existing 3GPP, non-3GPP networks. In addition, it also provides roaming and handover between these two networks for users.
  • The transmission rate reached 100Mbit/s due off-peak and 50Mbit/s during peak traffic period. 
  • Rapid deployment. 
  • Supports real-time services and lessen setup time for service connections.
