How does a Media Converter work and How is a Media Converter implemented?
There are two types of media converters, Copper-to-Fiber and Fiber-to-Fiber. The Copper-to-Fiber media converter is the most common type, and it functions as a transceiver. It converts the electrical pulse used in copper Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) network into light waves which is used in fiber optic cabling. This enables extended coverage via fiber optic cabling. The Fiber-to-Fiber media converter supports the conversion of one wavelength to another, multimode to single mode fiber and dual to single fiber. As the name suggests, it works as a converter between two optic fiber cables.
What are the benefits of the Media Converter?
As the demand for network speeds and bandwidth requirements grows, there is a need for the infrastructure to be able to support it. However, it is a costly investment to switch out old networks for new ones. The media converter helps to lower the costs by making use of extending infrastructures and increasing coverage by converting the UTP to fiber.
